Am I a freak or do you too experience cell discombobulation when faced with a new idea, word or concept that in a different setting could be an orgasm?
Craftivism: The Art of Craft and Activism: I am seriously in LOVE (and TOTALLY discombobulated). Craft + activism = craftivism.
Invited to take part in a seminar and political crafting afternoon hosted at James Cook University during Global Climate Change Week (#GCCW), seminar speaker, A/Professor Hillary Whitehouse, spoke on Craftivism.
As though I wasn’t already in love (words of endearment are my love language obviously), Dr Whitehouse featured The Junk Weavers Inc and Knitting Nannas Against Gas and Greed (many of whom are friends of mine and I adore the consciousness raising they do across all ages and stratas of community).
The frustrated academic and life long learner in me is soothed. It was like I was in paradise surrounded by sweet muses crafting words to effect social change; words of empowerment and personal growth through craft; words that felled me to my knees as I evangelically threw my hands to the heavens and committed my soul to craftivism.
Man, what a great afternoon we had. As usual I spoke garbage and wove it into every conversation…aka…I did a single-use plastic weaving demonstration. Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE my job?
Please, nobody tell my darling husband before I do: a PhD around sustainable and recycled craft is back on my agenda. Yeehaw….I am off to craft up a scholarship.
Keep talking garbage…and I’ll keep writing it. Mxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
