How to make the Rainbow Serpent

You need:

• Multiple plastic bottle lids of roughly the same size: 35 large, 10 smaller (to make the tail or neck). For a smaller snake, use less lids.
  
• One head and one tail lid: pointy lids work well like the lids from squeezable bottles of sauce or sport drinks
• Plastic strapping or similar to threat the bottle lids onto
• Hot glue gun and glue to secure the talk and head
• Pen to mark the snake’s eyes (or use small bottle lids)
• Scissors and bread board

What you do:

• With a pair of scissors or a pointy instrument, make a hole in the middle of  the bottle tops. Place your lid on the breadboard and poke the scissors through. For a bigger hole, rotate scissors.
• Arrange the different coloured lids into a pattern, IE: one black, one pink, two green; one pink, one black, two red, etc.
• Hot glue gun the end of the plastic webbing into the pointy cap you’ve chosen to be the snake’s tail.
• Thread all the smaller plastic lids onto the strapping.
• Thread all the bigger lids onto the plastic strapping.
• When your snake’s body is the length you want it, thread the end of the threading through the pointy lid that represents the snake’s head. Before you pull the pointy lid down to sit flush against the previous bottle lid, edge the lid with hot glue to secure the snake’s head.
• Put a dob of glue onto the end of the pointy cap so that the plastic threading becomes secured to the tip.
• Cut the threading at 1 1.2 centimeters. This is the snakes tongue. Fork the tongue by splitting the threading in half (use scissors or your fingernail).
• Mark some eyes onto the snake’s head.
• Play and intentionally teach about recycling, safety or Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.
