What is your Sustainable New Year’s Resolution

I want my grand children to see Kangaroos

If the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) is the result of living beyond our financial means then climate change is the result of living beyond our environmental means.

Everybody can make a difference because in crisis, the macro becomes the micro.

There are things you can do to live within your environmental means.

Become sustainable in your New Years Resolution. Make sure that your kids and grand-kids continue to have many more new-years worthy of making resolutions about ( I sure want my grand children to see Kangaroos and Dolphins in the wild).

Help heal the environment from our constant rape. Do something small, just one thing to start with, so that it becomes sustainable: part of your ongoing daily life. Here are some easy ideas:

  • Keep cloth shopping bags in your car so that you don’t have to use plastic bags
  • Use less water (don’t flush the toilet after you “yellow”, save your vegetable water to water the pot plants, brush your teeth from a cup of water, etc)
  • Start a compost bin (food and garden scraps plus paper soaked in a bucket of water make for rich soil to grow your own vegetables in)
  • Turn off the lights when you leave the room
  • Turn off your computer screen
  • Recycle everything (imagine there is no landfill space left and legislation makes us responsible for the waste we produce: hell, what would we do!)
  • Refuse to buy excess packaging. Find a similar product with less waste that you have to become responsible for
  • Eat local food to reduce food miles and to support the local economy
  • Lunch run car pool: not 5 work colleagues driving to get their lunch; one vehicle does the lunch run
  • Shampoo your hair once – twice sells more shampoo bottles that put more chemicals into the drain and more bottles into landfill
